24 hour comic

Filed under: Events — Sonny @ 9:48 pm

Here it is Mondo-minds. My 24 hour comic book in all it’s splendor. A comic book completely rendered in just one day! For those of you who don’t know, most cartoonists spend one day on one page. The purpose of the 24 hour challenge is not a beauty contest but an exercise in creativity and improvisation.

Sorry that the images don’t get very big. Hope you can read it!

Update on the Next button: It works now…kind’a. My buddy Paul  pointed out that I have to save the pages as 01, 02, 03 instead of just 1,2,3. However the original set I put in still exist somewhere and I can’t find them! So it works until you get to page 10 and 20. So after 9 the next page is 1 then the next is 10…same kind of thing for 20. I’ll figure out how to delete those later.

Still…it’s a lot easier now.

24HCD Update #7: 10/8 1pm Texas time

Filed under: Events — Sonny @ 2:56 pm

Well, we are in the 1pm hour and so far there are 11 artists left drawing! Previously there were 18 but right now, some are just either reading or taking a “nap”.  I tried to talk to Jose Esquivel but he was sleeping peacefully so I talked to Steve Erwin who finished in nine fantastic pages! Erwin said that he stopped because “My eyesight was giving out on me”. His comic was called “The last case of Dan Danger P.I.”. Next, I interviewed two comic artists by the names of Jonathan Miller and Chance and their project is “D’arc Town” and it’s basically a story about urban legends that were told from their hometown of Athens, Texas. One urban legend is of the story of Thunder Bridge. This story is about a bridge that is made of wood and metal and when someone drives through the bridge, the planks makes a very loud sound that sounds like thunder. Miller plans on going through the whole 24 and “…may take a nap or two”. Sonny Strait couldn’t be interviewed because he is currently taking a five minute nap for 10 minutes! :D

Well, this is the last update I can give out for now. I hope you all enjoyed my updates for the time being. I now have to head off to work for the man once again. I hope to hear from you all soon!

Peace and love always and forever!

24HCD Update #6: 10/8 12pm Texas time

Filed under: Events — Sonny @ 1:59 pm

Hello everyone! I’m the replacement blogger for this wonderful event! I’m Maury V. and right now we are in the 12:00 hour! So far, i’ve interviewed four artists in the store and was able to keep up with their progress and see how they are holding out thus far!

Brian Heiar

So far, it seems as though he may be the first to finish out of everyone here. How so? He’s on his 21st page but how he was able to get there that fast is that he is drawing everything on pencil; inking will have to wait. From what was told, he said that he’s here “…to have a fun and exausting time”. “It’s been 10 to 15 years since i’ve really drawn [like this]“.

Jose Esquivel

Jose Esquivel, future webcomic artist, claims that his art style comes from Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal. While his comic has no name, he’s moving at a very steady pace of only six pages. “I mostly read manga and comics” says Esquivel. He one day hopes to have a comic that has the manga and American comic feel to it because of “…the technique and story [it brings]“.

Shane Bzdok

At this hour, Shane Bzdok has drawn 16 pages and is working at a pretty steady pace of a page an hour! At the beginning of the event, he started off drawing and inking but halfway through, he stuck strictly to penciling because “Inking is too slow”. Bzdok’s project he’s working on with his writer friend is a Superman based story. “This is a big name project!” he says. In fact, he’s taking advantage of this event to work on his current project.

Sonny Strait

Although Sonny Strait is working on another project (hush!), he’s drawing at quite an elaborate pace of one page an hour. Strait is currently on his 17th page and to him, this “…feels weird cause you basically have to re-learn how to draw”. “After each hour, the pages get better each time…”. Since the event, Strait was able to develop a style of going a page an hour. His comic is called “Pre Shrink”.

Well everyone, this is all that I have for this hour. I will post one more update at one then I will have to leave for the day! I hope everyone here has found this to be very helpful today and I hope you all will stay tuned for the next update!

Peace and love everyone!
Maury V.

I don’t have any art on this update.  I don’t want to spoil you.  But do not fret; I will share with you some of the types of stories that are being brought to life here at Titan Comics.

Ghosts helping Halloween turn out alright, Robots and kids fighting mummies, B-movie sci-fi crap, kidnapped girlfriend with a little rock & roll, Alien Barbarians, Kitchie superhero, Horror Romance, Zombie monkeys with teenage angst, and a heroic archer vs. a giant robot.  And that isn’t even half the room!

24HCD Update #2: 10/7 11pm Texas time

Filed under: Events — Sonny @ 12:09 am

Well its 11:09 but who’s counting.

Two Hours in and everyone is into their grove.  The meet and great talk dropped off to small conversations concerning industry talk and “Can I borrow that pencil?”
I’m sure you are all waiting to see some of the art that has come out of here so far.  Well here you are.  If you start to feel emotions of excitement and joy don’t worry.  It’s only natural.

…and thats just the first couple of pages!

As I mentioned in the last update we have fundraiser going on from The Hero Foundry.  I wanted to take this time to tell you a little bit about the organization.
The Hero Foundry (www.theherofoundry.org) is a Non Profit Organization that is dedicated to inspiring the youth of today to become the heroes of tomorrow.  Our goal is to provide comic books, graphic novels and similar literature to children through libraries, school, hospitals, and other organizations that lack the financial resources to supply these materials.  Tonight they are working to raise over $1000 in 24 Hours.

24HCD Update #1: 10/7 10pm Texas time

Filed under: Events — Sonny @ 10:49 pm

Alright, here we go!

We’re here at Titan Comics for the 2006 24 Hour Comic Day.  We have 20+ talented artists all within these walls.  From James O’Barr to Sonny Strait.  We also have a fundraiser going on from The Hero Foundry.  And if that isn’t enough for ya we will have audio pod cast updates & interviews though out the night hosted by coolshite.net (be sure to check it out!)

The gun went off at exactly 8pm in Dallas Texas and everyone started moving on their work faster than fast, and quicker than quick.

Some came prepared with all the items that they would need to make it though the pages with ease.

Some brought every color of the Rainbow.

Teams of people just beginning to release their creative.

The last open spaces of the store are filled with artist working on their craft.

Be sure to check back, this is only the beginning.  Next will be the art, the pages, the colors!  And naturally the artists slowly losing it with the amount of caffeine in their system.
